Lessons from Jon Barron
Maintaining the Health of Your Mouth

In this week's excerpt from Lessons from the Miracle Doctors, Jon Barron provides specific recommendations as to what you should and shouldn't do to maintain the health of your mouth.

Daily Health Tip Image"General Recommendations:

  • Consider supplementing with avocado/soy unsaponifiables to protect against periodontal disease.

  • Consider using proteolytic enzymes to dissolve dental plaque and wash it away. (If the enzyme formula you try doesn't work, try another until you find one that does.)

  • Fluoride--If there's any way to keep it out of your city water supply, fight to do that. If it's already there, you have to make sure you remove it at your house so that it doesn't make it into your drinking water, bath, or shower. Also, you'll probably want to avoid fluoride toothpastes, and you'll definitely want to avoid fluoride "treatments" from your dentist.

  • Aluminum--Make sure it's not in the water you drink, and you might want to think twice about the antiperspirant you use. Also, look at the cookware you use. Aluminum cookware is, of course, a problem. (Heavy metal detoxification can help here.) Aluminum core cookware is better, but what metal or coating is the food touching? Stainless steel is good except, for the fact that it's a major source of nickel, which is a problem. (Again, regular heavy metal detoxes can help here too.) And teflon cookware contains minute traces of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a suspected carcinogen. Other types of cookware such as glass may be safer, but may be less satisfactory when it comes to cooking.

  • Mercury fillings--Unless you have some chronic health condition, you may not want to go through the expense of having your fillings replaced. However, you would be well advised to start some of the cleansing programs we describe--particularly the colon cleanse and some form of heavy metal cleansing, such as chelation therapy (or the use of a good heavy metal chelating formula). If you need any new fillings, don't use amalgam.

If you are going to have your fillings removed, go to a dentist who specializes in the removal of amalgam fillings. There's a whole procedure involved to minimize the amounts of powdered mercury that escapes down your throat and mercury vapor up into your nasal passages as a result of the high-speed drill used to remove the amalgam. But keep in mind that no matter how careful the dentist is, significant amounts of mercury will indeed enter your system during the removal process. Always follow up removal with a heavy metal detoxification.

  • Root canals--Don't. And if you have one, you may want to consider having it pulled. Look to titanium implants instead. Titanium itself presents some toxicity problems, but it's nothing compared to what leeches out of a root canal. "
