Lessons from Jon Barron Taking Back Control of Your Health In this week's excerpt from Lessons from the Miracle Doctors, Jon Barron lays out a path for taking back control of your health. "It's worth mentioning one more time that just because the policies of the medical establishment, government regulators, and pharmaceutical giants are bad doesn't mean that the people involved are bad. As I've said repeatedly, on a one-on-one basis, most of the individuals involved are good people trying to do the best job that they can. It's only in group think (and when hundreds of billions of dollars are on the line) that their better instincts are co-opted. But the bottom line is that these players and the rest of the system get away with this nonsense because we let them. - We need to take back control of our own health. The rest of this book will show you how to do that. Understand, all of the aforementioned agencies and organizations only exercise the power over our health that we have allowed them to take, inch by inch, over the years. We share in the responsibility for what has happened to us. We have contributed to our own bad health with every unwise choice we make at the supermarket, in fast food restaurants, and in the voting booths. Ultimately, it is up to us, as individuals and citizens, to take back control of our own health.
- We need to stop equating health with the temporary elimination of symptoms—and insist that our health-care providers do the same. The first injunction of the Hippocratic Oath, which all doctors swear to, is: "First, do no harm." We need to insist that our health-care system adheres to that injunction.
- Hamlet may have been addressing doctors when he said, "There is more in heaven and earth than is dreamt of in your philosophy." Doctors are dedicated practitioners of merely one branch of the healing arts—they are not gods. We need to take back the god-like powers we have granted them over our health. In most states and in many parts of the world, it is illegal to treat cancer with anything other than the three "approved" modalities: surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. This is unconscionable and intolerable.
- We need to demand fairness from the medical powers that be. If only 15 percent of all medical procedures have been scientifically validated, why does alternative health care carry a 100 percent requirement? If drugs that kill over 100,000 people a year can legally be sold, why then are herbs (which may be responsible for one or two deaths a decade, when severely overdosed) under attack? We must demand a level playing field.
- There is certainly a need to control the use of pharmaceutical drugs. Some agency needs to be in charge, but government regulatory agencies need to be totally restructured and put on a leash, with their cozy ties to the pharmaceutical industry severed.
- And, yes, there needs to be some agency in charge of alternative healing. An examination of alternative health practitioners will find the same kind of quality curve you see for physicians: a small percentage of charlatans and incompetents, those practicing with merely passable skills, the dedicated and competent healers, and the brilliant "miracle doctors." Somebody needs to regulate them, along with the potions, lotions, and devices that are used. But that someone is most assuredly not the FDA, its international equivalents, or any physician-dominated group. Asking medical doctors to oversee alternative healing is like asking executives from the National Football League to oversee professional soccer in the United States. The medical establishment doesn't like alternative healing; they have no feel for it, and they view it as competitive. Certainly, there are individual doctors who support alternative medicine, but as a whole the medical establishment is extremely hostile to all forms of complementary medicine. The AMA and the FDA repeatedly demonstrate their antipathy toward alternative healing, so there's no way they can function as overseers. The only solution is to create new agencies staffed and run by alternative healers to oversee the practice of the alternative healing arts—and then in ten years, after these agencies have been infiltrated by the financial interests that back alternative healing, throw everyone out and start again."
