Lessons from Jon Barron
Modern Medicine & Catastrophic Illness

In this week's excerpt from "Lessons from the Miracle Doctors," Jon Barron explains that although modern medicine is sometimes miraculous, it is less than it seems when it comes to catastrophic illness.

Daily Health Tip Image"Unlike some in the alternative health community, I am not anti-doctor. I was, in fact, a pre-med student for several years. I understand that sometimes there is no substitute for a doctor. In terms of surgical technique (the cutting apart and repair of the human body), modern medicine has made remarkable advances. In terms of identifying the germs that play a role in causing many diseases and improving sanitation to prevent those diseases, once again modern medicine has made remarkable advances. In terms of burns, trauma, and emergency room care, modern medicine is nothing short of miraculous. But in terms of treating and preventing most catastrophic illness, particularly the major scourges of the modern era—heart disease, cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer's—modern medicine stands an abject failure...to this point.

Despite all of the games played with statistics, the real numbers are undeniable. But more to the point, all of the above scourges are modern diseases, at least in terms of their emergence as epidemics. In the early 1900s, these diseases were almost unheard of. There is actually a documented conversation, from the beginning of the twentieth century, from a group of doctors standing around a patient with cancer. "Take a good look," remarked the senior physician, "for this is the last time you will see this illness in your lifetime." Yet, today, that remark is inconceivable. The important point to understand is that these diseases are not "natural," not "normal." They have only appeared en masse in our lifetime.

As for arguments that higher numbers just represent better detection and an aging population, that's self-evident nonsense! Obesity, diabetes, and skyrocketing cancer rates (breast cancer rates in England, for example, are up 80 percent in just the last thirty years) are not only afflicting more people, they are afflicting younger people. Adult-onset diabetes has been renamed type 2 diabetes, not because of better detection, but because so many children are now getting it. Despite trillions of dollars spent on medical care worldwide, the incidence of these diseases is accelerating year by year, a fact only occasionally acknowledged by the mainstream media.

Despite its abject failure in the treatment of these diseases (mortality rates are virtually unchanged for all of them), the modern medical machine has actually made it illegal for you, in many areas of United States and Europe, to seek out alternative therapies. For example, in 2005, Assembly Bill 2393 and Senate Bill 1691, which were written to allow doctors in California to legally prescribe alternative medicine in place of, or in combination with, conventional treatments for cancer, were crushed in committee and never even voted on. California's physicians are still at risk of losing their licenses if they prescribe anything other than surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy for treating cancer. How did this happen? How did we reach this point?"
