You may not be aware, but cooking meat at high temperatures, for example grilling, causes meat to produce compounds called heterocyclic amines (HCA), which have strong links to colorectal, stomach, lung, pancreatic, breast, and prostate cancers. To help lower that risk, marinating meat has been shown to sharply reduce levels of HCAs. Swim Safety Headed to the beach or the pool? Here are a few things to watch out for to keep you and your family safe: Dangers at the Beach The Environmental Protection Agency says that more than 3.5 million people in the US get sick every year after coming into contact with raw sewage at the beach. They also say that 3.5 million figure, in reality, might be a gross underestimate. The Danger of Swimming in Chlorinated Pools A study at the University of Cordoba in Spain found that a group of by-products of chlorine called haloacetic acids (HAAs) was present in the urine of swimmers less than 30 minutes after they emerged from the pool. This dangerous chemical is only allowed in restricted amounts in our drinking water by the Environmental Protection Agency because it has been associated with cancer and birth defects in other research. Swimming Pools, Chlorine & Asthma Researchers found that the subjects who had spent the most time in outdoor pools as children had by far the highest incidence of asthma. Research now shows that spray tanning may be just as dangerous as every other form of tanning, but for different reasons.
