Lessons from Jon Barron
Reversing Periodontal Disease

In this week's excerpt from Lessons from the Miracle Doctors, Jon Barron unveils avocado/soy unsaponifiables and how they can play a role in reversing periodontal disease.

Daily Health Tip Image"It is now understood that one biochemical in particular, produced in abundance as a result of periodontitis, is responsible for the erosion of oral structures, the eating away at your jawbone and the ligaments that hold your teeth to your jaw. This oral toxin is called interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) and it is a common mediator of the inflammation process. Your body's counter measure to IL-1beta is a family of biochemicals called transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta). This group of biochemicals has been identified as one of the factors capable of counteracting IL-1beta's destructive effects and plays a key role in tissue regeneration. Unfortunately, one of the effects of IL-1beta is that it inhibits the production of TGF-beta, the very substance that can counteract it and repair the damage.

A French study conducted by the Laboratory of Connective Tissue Biochemistry and the Maxillary-Facial Surgery Department, University Hospital Center, in Caen, France, found that that a phytosterol/sterolin extract concentrated from the oils found in avocado and soybean fibers (known as avocado/soy unsaponifiables, or ASU) can stop the erosive damage caused by IL-1beta in periodontal diseases. In other words, ASU helps protect against periodontal disease. Another French Study conducted by the Faculty of Dental Surgery, University Rene Descartes, in Paris, found that ASU also protects the fibers that hold your teeth in place--the destruction of which is a hallmark of periodontal disease. Bottom line: supplementation with ASU helps protect against and reverse periodontal disease."
