Lessons from Jon Barron
Proteolytic Enzymes & Dental Plaque

In this week's excerpt from Lessons from the Miracle Doctors, Jon Barron reveals how proteolytic enzymes can wash away dental plaque.

Daily Health Tip Image"Plaque is formed by a selective attachment and growth of oral microorganisms on a protein-based film that tightly adheres to the surface of teeth. Getting rid of plaque is important because it plays a central role as the catalyst in periodontal disease. The use of systemic proteolytic enzymes for eliminating dental plaque is certainly controversial. There have been several studies that have produced mixed results, and in fact, there are some proteolytic enzymes produced in the body (there are thousands of different kinds) and present in saliva that actually promote the growth of plaque. That said, I have personally experimented with and seen remarkable results using some proteolytic enzyme formulas in which heavy plaque disappeared in a matter of days.

How could this happen? Saliva plays a major role in the health of the oral cavity and the entire body. Saliva is made up primarily of water but also contains minerals and digestive enzymes such as amylase. It seems that some supplemental proteolytic enzymes are able to make their way from your blood to the saliva in your mouth, where they dissolve the protein-based film that bonds the plaque to your teeth, thus allowing the bacteria that cause dental caries to be washed away by your saliva. In fact, it turns out that this very concept is being examined by the National Institute of Dental Health and Craniofacial Research and by Boston University Medical School in an ongoing study titled "Salivary Proteins in Dental Integuments." While the results of the study are not yet available, the premise of the study offers support for what I've indeed seen with some proteolytic enzyme formulas."
