Lessons from Jon Barron
Effects of Fluoride

In this week's excerpt from Lessons from the Miracle Doctors, Jon Barron examines the toxic effects of fluoride.

Daily Health Tip Image"Dentists have accomplished many great things in this country in terms of promoting oral health, but on three key issues, they stand on the wrong side of history and of health—fluoride, mercury fillings, and root canals.

Fluoride

We'll talk more about the toxic effects of fluoride in your water in a later chapter, but for now it is important to understand that it has no place in water, your toothpaste, or in fluoride treatments from your dentist. The first relevant question when talking about fluoride and your teeth is: does it actually prevent tooth decay? Let's take a look.

One claim of dental researchers is that just introducing fluoride into a previously unfluoridated city's drinking water supply can reduce its inhabitants' rate of tooth decay by 40 to 70 percent. Sounds impressive, until you find that during similar timeframes, dental health improved in nearby communities with unfluoridated water at virtually the same rate, indicating that the improvement resulted from enhanced dental hygiene, not fluoridation. Another claim made in a 1990 National Institute of Dental Research epidemiological study declared that "water fluoridation has played a dominant role in the decline in caries and must continue to be a major prevention methodology." But others who examined the study results found that the difference in numbers of decayed or missing teeth or filled surfaces was minimal—about one-half of a single tooth surface out of 128 total tooth surfaces (less than 0.5 percent difference)."
