Today's Daily Health Tip
Using Clay as a Natural Detoxification Agent?
by Jennifer Good

Daily Health Tip ImageEach Friday we like to highlight lesser known health ingredients and natural herbs. This week we turn our focus to an age-old natural substance known as "calcium montmorillonite clay." While definitely a mouthful to pronounce, its power as a detoxifying agent is quite profound. Montmorillonite clay is a medicinal powdered clay derived from deposits of weathered volcanic ash (a relative of bentonite clay and zeolite).

It was first discovered in Montmorillon, France in the 1800s. Sailing vessels leaving France were known for storing clay vessels on board for the treatment of dysentery as well as other conditions. Not exclusive to France, Native American healers have used it for centuries as a treatment of a variety of illnesses. (1)

So what does this "clay" do? It is one of the most effective natural intestinal detoxifying agents known, capable of absorbing up to 40 times its weight in fecal matter. This can be huge considering many people, because of dietary and health habits, store between 10-20 pounds of old fecal matter in their colons. If that waste hangs around longer than necessary, its impact on the body is profound.

The clay is also capable of absorbing a wide variety of toxins in the intestinal tract. Technically, the clay first absorbs toxins (heavy metals, free radicals, and pesticides), attracting them to its extensive surface area where they adhere like flies to sticky paper; then it absorbs the toxins, taking them in the way a sponge mops up a kitchen counter mess. In fact, according to the Canadian Journal of Microbiology (31 [1985], 50-53), montmorillonite can absorb pathogenic viruses, aflatoxin (a mold), and pesticides and herbicides including Paraquat and Roundup. The clay is eventually eliminated from the body with the toxins bound to its multiple surfaces.

Natural detoxifying agents such as Montmorillonite Clay are extremely useful in maintaining a healthy body. Your intestinal tract is the source of all nutrient access to your body. If it isn't working properly, you have two major problems.

  • First, you have a hard time digesting food properly—breaking it down sufficiently so that your body can use it.
  • And then, even if you can digest it properly, if the intestinal wall is covered with hardened waste and colonies of hostile bacteria/flora, you'll end up absorbing only a fraction of the nutritional value of the food you eat.

Like most natural health ingredients, Montmorillonite Clay is best used as a part of a total health care system. For more information about natural detoxification ingredients and the process, please click here.
