Lessons from Jon Barron
The Optimum Diet

In this week's excerpt from Lessons from the Miracle Doctors, Jon Barron discusses why there is so much confusion about the optimum diet.

Daily Health Tip Image"Probably no topic has been more discussed (and is more confusing) than what constitutes the optimum diet. Almost every day, we are presented with another book promoting a new type of diet—the caveman diet, the blood-type diet, the Ornish Plan, the high-carbohydrate diet, the Pritikin diet, the Atkins diet, the Zone, the South Beach diet, and on and on. It is not my goal in this chapter to detail an optimum diet plan for you. Even if that were my intent, it couldn't be done in a single chapter. Instead, what I want to do is arm you with enough information so that you can selectively evaluate any plan you might be interested in and intelligently choose those parts that might work for you. So, with that in mind, let's step back and take an objective view of the situation.

Let me begin by categorically stating that medical doctors don't study health and nutrition in medical school. The average time spent is one class of one hour a week for eight to ten weeks. That's it. If you read two good books on the topic, you know more than 99 percent of all the doctors in the world. Just because a doctor, or the Journal of the American Medical Association, makes a pronouncement on health and nutrition does not necessarily make it true, no matter how peer reviewed it may be. And as for government agencies, they are under intense lobbying pressure, as evidenced by "modifications" to the food pyramid in the United States to promote industry (such as the dairy industry) over health or the passage of the European Food Supplements Directive, which was designed to promote the use of prescription drugs by restricting access to herbs and supplements across an entire continent.

When it comes to the "authorities" in health and nutrition, just think of some of the nonsense you've been "fed" over your lifetime. Remember, it was these same authorities who at one time told you that margarine was good and that butter was bad, that diet had nothing to do with cancer, and that allowed soda pop to be sold at schools. In fact, just think of hospital food—keep in mind that doctors are in charge of the overall programs in hospitals. If hospital food represents the medical community's definition of healthy, healing food, then we need to rely on a different group of experts.
